Description

During my residency at the CALQ studio in Belem, Brasil I am interested in researching local legends
and myths. How stories are created, passed on, altered and shared. The stories can be
historically accurate or totally fictitious. I am fascinated in cross-referencing traditional
allegories and cautionary tales with themes of the local politics and the surrounding
geographical landscape. I am eager to discover how the change in environment will
influence my drawing and video creations.

I am trying to make use of local-made materials to create a new body of work. Paper and video
are my main materials. I would like to develop a drawing series in large scale. The
works will be illustrative and narrative in style. My images will be stimulated by
discoveries I make in the local territory, and inspired from the local culture.

I am also using the opportunity to share the print studio of local artist Armando Sobral from the Institut des Arts de Pará.
I am involving various printmaking methods with my series of
works. My 2D work uses paper exclusively. It is a material I am very attracted to for my
illustrative style. I use handmade papers with inks, gauche, watercolors, and acrylic
fluids to make my forms with a focus on the contour line. My drawings are
representational and figurative in nature. I cut out images, and I make collages with
decorative papers mixed with my drawings. I am attracted to repetitive motifs and
pattern. In particular I plan to use linocuts, or wood cuts to make smaller
repetitive motifs to be integrated with the larger drawings by stamping.
