Description

A grassy hill/spot under the open sky. Below the grass are waves (cardboard cut out). They sway back and forth in layers.
They are “The Tides”.

Eyes appear in the sky and we see the character “This Guy, The Sky” emerge.
We see his figure. He hovers in the air. He asks the Tides for “the vessel of ultimate power” (a cheesie smile).
The tides deny him. He is miffed and broods but is also shiny and beautiful.

A Girl walks over the hill/grass and sits by the water and sighs. The tides offer her the “vessel of ultimate power”.
(a hand comes up from the waves).. She takes it and it becomes her smile.

project description

Smile stealers is a live action animation short film.
It combines analogue special effects and overhead projection/animation with digital video and after effects animation.

Smile Stealers is a short story about a girl who has a destiny to become a warrior.
Her name is Tyr, like the Norse God of War.
She battles the sky, saves a unicorn, escapes a Paper Moon photo booth trap and fights the Queen of “A Moon” and her Moon Children
to set the smiles free.

By encompassing song, dance, theatre design, animation (both digital and analogue projections) we strive to create a Gestamkunstwerk;
a total work of art that encompasses all aspects/dimensions of the arts. We are influences by the mythical realism of William Blake.
Which he used to describe the outcome of the process that brought his hallucinations into reality with drawings and paintings.
Michel Gondry brings fantastical storybook imagination to life with stop animated crafted cardboard props.
Jean Cocteau used simple analogue techniques to force perspective and create illusion.
We would like to surface character’s natural cartoon, making them larger than life. Making life large.

The main members of our group, Parlour Treats, are Allison Moore, Jasa Baka, Tyr Jami and Todd MacDonald.

Allison Moore is a multidisciplinary artist developing new technologies in video, animation
and interactive computing as an invited artist at Studio XX and the SAT [society of Arts and Technology].
She has also produced two puppet theatre productions.

Jasa Baka is a co-founder of Parlour Treats collective, playwright, director, theatre designer and producer.
She also provides live visual accompaniment for musical performances/bands using overhead analog projections
of her drawings and other techniques. She uses the same analogue projection techniques to create tableau
for stylized photography that she directs.

Tyr Jami is gifted musician, tap dancer, and actor. She has been studying and playing cello since the age of seven.
The past year she has been studying classical and jazz music at Concordia University.
Co-founder of Ache Records & Drip Audio/Universal recording artists, The Winks, she has been writing, singing, recording and playing songs
since 1999. Tyr is also co-founder of the multi-disciplinary art collective Parlour Treats with her sister Jasa Baka.
They have been collaborating since Tyr's birth in 1984.

Todd Macdonald wears many musical hats: he’s a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, recording & live sound engineer,
producer and co-founder of Ache Records & Drip Audio/Universal recording artists, The Winks.

In conclusion, Parlour Treats, aims to produce a filmed musical theatre performance to create a 20-minute film.
This film will combine analogue projection effects and theatrical performance and tableau, music, song, dance,
animation and digital cinema.

Lion fights the sky.
Sky wins though he is slashed and dripping by the end, after suffocating the Lion.
He now has the two halves of the smile (vessel of ultimate power).

SETTINGS

The first half of the story takes place outdoors in a forest
The second half takes place on “A Moon”.
This Guy, The Sky is always present, watching and reacting to all that is going on, He is a part of every setting in the background.

INTRO

Night Sky, full of stars. Each star has one eye. The stars close their eyes and go to sleep. Then the Sky is dark. Large Eyes fade in and appear in the sky, they belong to This Guy, The Sky. The Large Sky eyes cry, each tear contains a star. They fall into the Tides below. The Large eyes close after all the stars are gone, none left to cry.

This Guy, The Sky realizes that the stars are gone. He sees the tides below and a reflection appears of the crescent moon in the water. The eyes stare back up at the moon in the sky then at us as the night turns to a brilliant sparkling perfect blue sky of day.
